Training

The Guelph Police Service's Training and Education Unit is comprised of one Sergeant and one Constable. The goal of the Unit is to provide current and high quality training to civilian staff, Guelph Police Service and University of Guelph Special Constables, and Guelph Police Officers. The Training and Education Unit continuously monitors emerging Officer Safety issues and trends. Trainers work diligently to provide current training and education in this area. The Training Unit strives to contribute to the positive growth and development of all of our members.

 

The Training and Education Unit is responsible for delivering and facilitating mandated training as required by the Ontario Police Services Act Policing Standards and the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. Some of these mandated training topics include:

• Annual Firearms proficiency re-qualification
• Annual Defensive Tactics/Use of Force re-qualification
• Suspect Apprehension Pursuit Training
• CPR, First Aid, and annual WHMIS Training
• Mental Health Training
• Annual Supervisor Taser re-qualification


In addition to mandated training, the Training Unit also provides members with training in areas such as:

• Customer Service
• Advanced Patrol
• Labour Relations
• Elder Abuse
• Technical Crimes
• Risk Management
• By-Laws
• Search Warrants
• Infectious Disease
• Domestic Violence
• Front-Line Supervisor
• Dispatch

The Training and Education Supervisor is also responsible for the registration of all training courses for members attending the Ontario and Canadian Police Colleges as well as courses attended at satellite Police Services. In addition, the Supervisor is responsible for quarterly Police Service Board Use of Force Reports, monthly Ministry of the Solicitor General Suspect Apprehension Pursuit Reports, the Member Tuition Reimbursement Program and participation on the Health and Safety Committee.
