Critical Incident Response

The Critical Incident Response Team is made up of 7 Incident Commanders, 7 Negotiators, 4 Scribes and 3 Officers assigned to Technical Support. Members of the team attend training as it comes available and the team takes part in training scenarios annually. The team is routinely deployed in critical situations that could include hostage taking or barricaded persons.

Incident Commanders are police supervisors who receive specialized training to coordinate the actions and communications of police and other emergency services at the scene of a critical incident. Working closely with the TRU supervisor, the Incident Commander assumes responsibility for operational decision-making aimed at diffusing volatile situations.

Crisis Negotiators play a key role in the problem solving (negotiating) process aimed at the peaceful resolution of critical incidents. They attempt to establish contact with an armed or barricaded person to encourage their surrender.
