Keeping Guelph Safe ... Together.

Crime Analyst

The Crime Analyst position, reporting to the Inspector of Neighbourhood Services, was created and filled in 2005 as part of the Guelph Police Service's 2004-2006 business plan, Partners in Excellence. One of the objectives of that business plan was to "enhance crime, call and public disorder analysis function, in particular to support violent crime and property crime investigations and improve clearance rates." The work the Crime Analyst does on a daily basis meets this objective. The Crime Analyst provides a proactive approach to policing, determining patterns in crime and working to anticipate and prevent crimes before they occur. Training in crime and intelligence analysis, geographic profiling, and investigative analysis all support this work.

All crime data produced by the Guelph Police Service is collected by the Crime Analyst and analyzed to determine if there are any patterns or trends to criminal occurrences in the City of Guelph. Those occurrences include break and enters, stolen vehicles, drugs, and fraud, among others. By looking at times, dates, locations, methods of operation, information about the suspect and the particulars of occurrences, patterns can be identified that help determine areas that may require increased patrol, and possibly prevent future criminal incidents.

As well, criminal incidents can be compared against similar incidents to help solve cases. This task includes regularly liaising with other police services to track similar criminal events that occur in different jurisdictions. In addition, the information maintained by the Crime Analyst can be used to help identify stolen property that has been recovered.

Attending line-ups with officers before they start their shift is another duty of the Crime Analyst, during which reports on persons of interest, warrants to arrest and other information is shared with officers. In turn, officers provide information to the Crime Analyst that can be used to shed light on criminal incidents and on persons of interest. Reports on criminal activities are also released to the public via community alerts on our website. Through these reports Guelph citizens are made aware of incidents that have occurred in the City, and are also provided tips on how to protect themselves against these types of crimes.
