The Media/Community Relations office is comprised of one Sergeant, four High School Resource Officers, two School Safety Officers and one Officer who is responsible for delivering the Values, Influence and Peers program. Sergeant Doug Pflug is the Media/Community Relations officer for the Guelph Police Service. He is responsible for maintaining ongoing liaison with the media, responding to community requests for speakers and liaising with community crime prevention groups such as Neighbourhood Watch, Block Parents and Community Volunteer Patrol. The School Safety program is one of the longest running community programs offered by the Guelph Police Service. Constables Robin Clark and Frank Kecskemeti are the current School Safety Officers. The School Safety Officers develop an excellent rapport with students from all grades in the City's 42 elementary schools where the program operates. One of the many tasks assigned to the School Safety Officers is the Street Patrol Program. Officers are responsible for training and providing ongoing monitoring and support to the more than 1,000 student safety patrollers. Stranger awareness, bullying prevention, bicycle safety training, and the popular "Bicycle Rodeo" are examples of the many other components of the School Safety program. The Values, Influences, and Peers (V.I.P.) program is directed to all Grade 6 classes in the City of Guelph. The purpose of this program is to help Grade 6 students make positive lifestyle choices. This is done through interactive presentations on authority figures, youth and the law, drug awareness and non-violent conflict resolution. A graduation ceremony is held for the students who successfully complete the VIP program. Constable Scott Srigley is the current VIP Officer. The Guelph Police Service also has a High School Resource Officer (HSRO) program directed to students in Grade 9 through Grade 12. These officers work closely with high school administration to promote a safe, positive learning environment for students and staff within the school facility. They provide guidance and direction to students when needed, and participate in class discussions, assemblies and parent groups. HSRO officers provide a positive police role, and work to promote a better understanding of law enforcement. These officers assist in the investigation and enforcement of unacceptable behaviour within the school and immediate area. The four current High School Resource Officers are: Constables Michael Gatto, Arif Hasham, Kevin McCord, and Mary-Ellen McEwen. |
