Welcome to the "New and Improved" Guelph Police Service web site:
I invite you to navigate through our site and explore the many services and community programs we offer. On behalf of the Guelph Police Services Board and all of our staff, I hope the information contained herein will assist you in having a greater understanding of community policing initiatives and crime prevention strategies in the City of Guelph.
The Guelph Police Service has a long history of faithfully serving the citizens of Guelph, having been formed in 1827 with the hiring of the first police officer and making us one of the oldest police departments in Canada. Today, the Service has an authorized complement of 192 police officers and 83 civilians serving a population of approximately 124,000, supplemented by a further 18,000 students and staff at the University of Guelph. The Guelph Police enjoy the notoriety of being the first police service in the Province to implement a motorcycle patrol; the hand held walkie-talkie; and, the new "FleetNet" digital, trunked and encrypted communications system. Another first in the Province will be the shared "Emergency Services" facility (police, fire and EMS), currently being built on Clair Road in the south part of the city and slated to open in the fall of 2010.
Guelph has experienced unprecedented growth in the last few years which has created many new challenges. However, we are proud to say that from a policing perspective, by way of a sustained and dedicated effort from our members and with the ongoing support of our Board, Council, citizens and community partners, Guelph remains a very safe and desireable community. In fact, in 2009 and again in 2010, Statistics Canada through utilization of their "Crime Severity Index" identified Guelph as the safest Census Metropolitan Area in Canada with a population over 100,000. This is extremely positive recognition that we proudly share with our citizens and policing partners who all contribute to keeping this great community safe.
Thank you once again for showing an interest in the Guelph Police Service and we hope you enjoy your tour.
