Keeping Guelph Safe ... Together.

Canine Unit

The major responsibilities of the Canine Unit are person searches and premise searches for locating missing or wanted people or items. In 2007, the Canine Unit consists of six members: 3 Dog Handlers (Cst's McMichan, Moulton & Crowe) and 3 Police Service dogs (Magnum, Nitro & Charger). The officers in the Canine Unit are deployed from the neighbourhood Platoons. They work in conjunction with three Canine Units in Waterloo Region. This partnering arrangement enables 24 hour Canine Team coverage in Waterloo and Guelph, seven days a week.

Training is a key element of all police canine programs. The Canine Unit trains with police service canine teams from Toronto, Waterloo, Oxford and Peel. They provided increased foot patrols in higher crime areas of Guelph as well as at selected parks, river paths and industrial/commercial areas. The Canine Unit also contributes to the corporate goal of building relationships between police and young members of the community by developing lesson plans and making presentations to schools and neighbourhood groups throughout the city.

Our canine unit is funded by community partners throughout the community. Their generosity is what keeps our canine unit up and running.
