How to Report a Collision

  • No injuries, damage under $1000:

If no one is injured and the damage to all vehicles combined appears to be less than $1000, you don't need to involve the police. You should exchange your name, driver's licence information, vehicle ownership information AND insurance information (company and policy number) with the other party. Make sure all information is complete and accurate. If the other party refuses to do this, call the police for assistance before anyone leaves the scene.

Once the information has been exchanged, you may make a civil agreement to fix damages or you may go through your insurance company.

  • No injuries, damage $1000 or more:

If the damage to all vehicles combined appears to be $1000 or more, then the collision MUST be reported to the police, regardless of whether this collision took place on a parking lot or a roadway. If vehicles can be safely driven please ensure that you have exchanged your particulars (driver's licence number, ownership with licence plate number, and insurance) with the other party AND that you have received theirs, before leaving the scene. Police officers may be required to investigate collisions at the scene (please see below conditions for clarification) or a police officer may direct drivers to attend with their vehicles to the collision reporting center. Drivers must report to the collision reporting center within 24 hours. If any of the vehicles are not drivable, police officers at the scene will dispatch tow trucks and officers will complete a collision report at the scene.

  • Injury Collisions (regardless of the amount of damage):

If the collision results in an injury or you believe that the other party may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police officers will attend AND investigate the collision at the scene. Ensure your safety at the scene, get the names of any potential witnesses that might assist the officers and wait for police to arrive.

Police will investigate a collision at the scene when a collision involves:

  • - Any vehicle that requires the services of a towing company
  • - Injury or death
  • - Criminal activity (e.g. any suspicion of alcohol, stolen vehicle, assault)
  • - Federal, Provincial or Municipal vehicles
  • - Vehicles transporting dangerous goods
  • - A person who is uninsured or is a suspended driver

  • - A taxi, limo, school bus, or coach bus
