2. Fraud Alert - "Romance Scam"
Recently, the Guelph Police Service has been contacted by two separate residents of Guelph that were victimized by the Romance Scam. We want you to be able to RECOGNIZE fraud as it is happening, REPORT it to Police and STOP it from happening.
This is how the scam works: The scammer pretends to be looking for love, and engages the affection of their potential victim, often using photos from the internet to present an attractive view of themselves. They target people on dating sites or in chat rooms and will often say that they are in love remarkably quickly in an effort to attach the victim to them. Once they think their target is falling for the lies, the scammer will ask for help with living expenses, cost of a visa or flight to the victim's home country, say that they are ill or were involved in an accident and need urgent medical attention, or that they need help paying for their medical needs or education. They will continue to ask for money again and again and will request that the victim wire transfers the money. The money is being wired worldwide - Nigeria and the UK.
Further information regarding scams can be found on the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website at www.antifraudcentre.ca.
Wiring money to a STRANGER will result in victims losing their money.
The two Guelph victims lost over $34,000 in this scam.
