Quick Navigation911 Basics: How to report a crime How to report a crime:911 and administrative phone calls are answered by the Guelph Police Communications Unit 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Emergency calls for our city are dispatched for police response. Based on the nature of the call, it is automatically prioritized for example; a motor vehicle accident with people injured is an emergency or urgent need for police response and is classified as priority 1. A break and enter, by comparison, that was just discovered, but is believed to have occurred sometime ago would be classified as priority 2: no immediate threat to safety; and priority 3 calls, for example a found bike, is of low risk to public safety. The communicator can manually adjust the priority of the call classification, if necessary, based on the information provided by the caller. Communicators also receive 911 and administrative calls from hearing or speech impaired members of our community by means of a TTY (teletypewriter). For those who speak another language, our service subscribes to Language Line Services who provides us with over-the-phone translation service in over 170 languages. Is it a life-threatening emergency situation or a crime in progress? Call 911. The communicator will ask if you need Police, Fire or Ambulance. If you need the police, the communicator will then ask you for the location of the emergency and will either transfer your call to the OPP or will continue to ask for information.
